YES they are back again from the depression era. Those famous brass balls signifying loan or pawn shop.
The pawnbrokers' symbol is three spheres suspended from a bar. The three sphere symbol is attributed to the Medici family of Florence, Italy, owing to its symbolic meaning of Lombard.[1] This refers to the Italian province of Lombardy, where pawn shop banking originated under the name of Lombard banking. The three golden spheres were originally the symbol which medieval Lombard merchants hung in front of their houses, and not the arms of the Medici family. It has been conjectured that the golden spheres were originally three flat yellow effigies of byzants, or gold coins, laid heraldically upon a sable field, but that they were converted into spheres to better attract attention.

Most European towns called the pawn shop the "Lombard". The House of Lombard was a banking family in medieval London, England. According to legend, a Medici employed by Charlemagne slew a giant using three bags of rocks. The three ball symbol became the family crest. Since the Medicis were so successful in the financial, banking, and money lending industries, other families also adopted the symbol. Throughout the Middle Ages, coats of arms bore three balls, orbs, plates, discs, coins and more as symbols of monetary success. Pawnbrokers (and their detractors) joke that the three balls mean "Two to one, you won't get your stuff back".

Pollutants are of varied kinds and tackling each one has its own methods. One such pollutant comes in the form of used cars. The rate at which cars are being produced and consumed is increasing alarmingly. People soon get ‘bored’ with one car and move on to purchase a new one creating an ever-increasing junkyard of old used cars. Amid such a use and throw scenario, Miina Akkijyrkka attempts to make optimum use of these discarded vehicles and gives them a completely new look.

This Helsinki based sculptor shows a close attachment to cows through her works. She is one who works with cows in more than one way and her academic history goes on to prove it. She did attend an art school to pursue her interest in sculpting but also spent one full year at the Dairy Farming School. Adding a bit of mechanics to her two fields of study she came up with these gigantic bovine creatures that adorn the hillsides and countryside keeping an eye on all the grazing cows.

It is not an easy job to acquire old cars. Although there being plenty many people do not wish to part with their cars. Akkijyrkka often goes trekking in her country and in the process also looks out for used cars. Having successfully purchased the old cars she heads homewards where every car is carefully pulled apart, welded where necessary and soon given a completely new makeover. These creatures made out of scraps of used cars stand tall amidst nature presenting a definite figure which otherwise would have been parts of huge junkyards.

The cow sculptors created by Akkijyrkka break the monotony of the green stretches with the myriad colors they exhibit. As all the cars she has made use of are of varied colors, her cows also come out in multiple shades. The very form and posture of these cows also present a variety with some standing erect, some grazing while some sitting in a comfortable position simply taking a look at the lovely surroundings.

On his latest creation Edwards said, "I thought of her as a beautifully delicate fairy-tale princess, waiting to be rescued from fame and addiction, but her prince never came. I had always expected to sculpt her portrait, but I was waiting for her to put some of her troubles behind her. She had made me pay attention to contemporary music again."

Without a doubt, the symbol of Rio de Janeiro is Christ the Redeemer, which is a statue of Jesus Christ that overlooks Rio. Construction on the iconic Brazilian statue finished in 1931, and in 2007, Christ the Redeemer was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It is generally considered the largest art deco statue on Earth.
"LIMA (AFP) – Peruvian President Alan Garcia's plans to build the world's tallest Christ statue here has angered local residents who fear the soaring monument will mar the city's skyline.

Garcia, who told reporters he has personally donated $37,000 to finance the project, said the 37-meter (120-foot) statue is a "personal dream."

"This figure can bless Peru and protect Lima," he said about the project, which is also being funded by Brazilian companies.

Lima's Mayor Susana Villaran has expressed dismay over the location of the statue on a hill overlooking Lima's bay, which forms a 20 kilometer (12 mile) cove along the city's western edge.

"I respect President Garcia, and I am a believer. But there is a thing called the integrity of the landscape of Lima's bay," she said, adding that the president should have consulted local authorities beforehand.

The statue's proposed location on the Morro Solar hill also interferes with another historical site, said historian and archaeologist Guillermo Lumbreras.

"For years the Morro Solar has been undergoing a series of projects as a historical park... The hill is seen as a site where there was a battle in the war against Chile, and it should stay that way," he said.

Villaran said she intends to speak with Garcia and push for other sites for the Christ statue.

(Reuters) - The world's largest sculpture of a human body is being carved out of the British landscape using more than a million tonnes of rock and soil left behind by coal-mining.

"Northumberlandia," designed by American landscape architect Charles Jencks, will be nearly half a mile long when it is finished in 2013.

The sculpture, of a woman's body, has already been given the epithet `Goddess of the North' by locals in Northumberland in the far northeast of England, a part of the world that is no stranger to grand man-made projects.

Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans, massive baronial castles, coalmines, shipyards and the huge Angel of the North sculpture by Antony Gormley, are all features of its landscape.

The best views of Northumberlandia are from the air, but visitors will be able to see her features up close by wandering the four-mile network of paths that run along the curves of her body.

One-and-a-half million tonnes of soil and clay taken from the nearby Shotton surface mine are being used to make the sculpture, which workers have been crafting for around a year.

Harvard-educated designer Jencks, 71, who was born in Fife, Scotland, said: "This is very much like alchemy; turning coal into energy and landscape into art.

"It offers us the opportunity to create art from the necessity of extracting coal."

Northumberlandia is costing around 2 million pounds and is funded by the Banks Group, the UK firm that operates the mine, and the Blagdon Estate, which owns the land.

Blagdon is the family estate of Viscount Ridley, whose son Matt Ridley, 53, said the idea for the sculpture came from a desire to be innovative.

"People have rightly asked why we are doing this," he said. "We could have submitted an application to simply restore the land back to agriculture, but we wanted to do something different.

"We are making a work of art with a bulldozer, rather than a paintbrush."

The sculpture will be at the heart of a public park being built close to the town of Cramlington near Newcastle.

As we enter 2011 so begins another run on commodities prices including copper the dominate metal in Bronze sculpture and statues. So signals the end of bargain bronze sculpture affordable to the middle class in USA. The bargain bronze sculpture reached its high watermark in the early 21st century around 200 to 2006. The ability for American artist to design a sculpture and have a foreign foundry make the molds and casting at low labor rates made sculpture affordable to anyone who desired it. Going into 2007 and 2008 copper prices multiplied as did energy costs used in making and transporting the statues and fountains. The costs and end user price doubled and tripled. In spite of world economic slowdown the costs have still remained higher.
As we enter into 2011 Copper costs have reached a record high at $4.44 a lb beating the 2008 high by a full dollar. A predicted fuel increase to over $100. a barrel will also double the cost of shipping a 40ft sea container from Asia making cost rise even more.
The high inflationary rates are mostly a reaction to Obama's QE2 or Quantitative Easing two economic plan that devalues the US dollar. In short the dollar is worth less so overseas sellers want more of them. Another great loss for the middle class of America.

We make many styles or nude statues so what belongs in public? Should these legs overbear a small Long Island resort town?
IMHO I have seen many statues including those on the lawns of Smithsonian Museums that just would not belong in a resort beach town. I say let the local public decide what works in the local neighborhood.Send the legs walking to SOHO or other artsy area.

A tribute to Freedom and Liberty our sacred heritage.
Seems the interpretation changes with time. Moods and public desires swing like a pendulum back and forth. It always has to swing too far one way before the mood swings back again. I like the classic interpretation set forth in the Constitution of United States in 1776. This is one document that fits all for the best of all citizens. So lets restore liberty once again.
The Statue of Freedom

The bronze Statue of Freedom by Thomas Crawford is the crowning feature of the dome of the United States Capitol. The statue is a classical female figure of Freedom wearing flowing draperies. Her right hand rests upon the hilt of a sheathed sword; her left holds a laurel wreath of victory and the shield of the United States with thirteen stripes. Her helmet is encircled by stars and features a crest composed of an eagle's head, feathers, and talons, a reference to the costume of Native Americans. A brooch inscribed "U.S." secures her fringed robes. She stands on a cast-iron globe encircled with the words E Pluribus Unum, the national motto at the time of her placement atop the dome.

The lower part of the base is decorated with fasces and wreaths. Ten bronze points tipped with platinum are attached to her headdress, shoulders, and shield for protection from lightning. The bronze statue stands 19 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 15,000 pounds. Her crest rises 288 feet above the east front plaza.

A monumental statue for the top of the national Capitol appeared in Architect Thomas U. Walter's original drawing for the new cast-iron dome, which was authorized in 1855. Walter's drawing showed the outline of a statue representing Liberty; Crawford proposed an allegorical figure of "Freedom triumphant in War and Peace." After Secretary of War Jefferson Davis objected to the sculptor's intention to include a liberty cap, the symbol of freed slaves, Crawford replaced it with a crested Roman helmet.

Crawford was commissioned to design the Statue of Freedom in 1855 and executed the plaster model for the statue in his studio in Rome. He died in 1857 before the model left his studio. The model, packed into six crates, was shipped from Italy in a small sailing vessel in the spring of 1858. During the voyage the ship began to leak and stopped in Gibraltar for repairs. After leaving Gibraltar, the ship began leaking again to the point that it could go no farther than Bermuda, where the model was stored until other transportation could be arranged. Half of the crates finally arrived in New York in December, but all sections were not in Washington until late March of 1859.

Beginning in 1860, the statue was cast in five main sections by Clark Mills, whose bronze foundry was located on the outskirts of Washington. Work was halted in 1861 because of the Civil War, but by the end of 1862 the statue was finished and temporarily displayed on the Capitol grounds. The cost of the statue, exclusive of installation, was $23,796.82. Late in 1863, construction of the dome was sufficiently advanced for the installation of the statue, which was hoisted in sections and assembled atop the cast-iron pedestal. The final section, the figure's head and shoulders, was raised on December 2, 1863, to a salute of 35 guns answered by the guns of the 12 forts around Washington.

The plaster model of the statue, which had been in storage for 25 years, was reassembled and restored in the basement rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building, where it was returned to public display in January 1993. In late 2008 the model was relocated to the new Capitol Visitor Center, where it is now a focal point of Emancipation Hall.

On May 9, 1993, after almost 130 years in place, the bronze statue was removed from its pedestal by helicopter for restoration. The work was needed because of extensive pitting and corrosion on the surface of the bronze and because of a crack and rusting on the cast-iron pedestal. The project was guided by the recommendations of a thorough conservation and engineering study conducted in 1991. The United States Capitol Preservation Commission provided $780,000 in privately raised funds, which covered all project costs.

The disfiguring caulk and much of the corrosion were removed by water blasted at medium pressure. Repairs to the statue included the insertion of over 700 bronze plugs in the most significant pits; bronze patches were also inserted where needed. Rusting original iron elements and the interior paint were removed. The bronze, which varied in composition and condition, was painstakingly repatinated to the "bronze green" noted in early records. Finally, layers of acrylic lacquer and wax were applied to protect the surface against further corrosion, and small gaps were sealed with caulk.

The cast-iron pedestal was restored in place atop the dome. The metal was stripped of paint, and the wreaths and fasces were removed to ensure that they were thoroughly cleaned and coated. The crack was permanently repaired, and the entire pedestal was primed and painted with a color specially mixed to match the statue.

University Place leader's spirit lives on in sculpture

The spirit that led Terry Reim to become one of University Place's biggest supporters is imbued in a bronze duck sculpture that will soon be dedicated in his honor at a place that was still a civic dream when he died.

Reim and his friend Dixie Harris founded the Duck Parade about a decade ago to generate foot traffic for a farmers market, another of their initiatives from the same period. While the farmers market is gone for now, the Duck Daze event continues each June, with participants dressing up like ducks to celebrate the end of the rainy season.

The affinity between Reim and the waterfowl doesn't end there. Like a duck paddling in water, those who knew him say he worked tirelessly while yielding results that looked effortless.

Reim's widow, Ruthann Reim McCaffree, said his mantra was to "move ahead and get things done."

"He was intense and complicated," she said. "He loved this community."

Reim was a strong proponent of University Place's incorporation and wanted to grow the tax base of the fledgling city - a goal officials aim to realize when their Town Center project finally opens on Bridgeport Way.

Plans for Town Center were just starting to take shape when Reim died at age 61 in April 2003. He fell off a ladder while remodeling his home.

Reim couldn't have anticipated that a sculpture built in his honor would be one of the first completed pieces of the development.

The first major tenant arrives in February, when The Pierce County Library System plans to open its new 15,000-square-foot library inside a civic building.

Meanwhile, construction continues on that building, which also will feature the future City Hall, ground-floor retail space and underground parking. The city also plans to sell about a dozen lots slated for mixed-use development around the building.

Drawing on his background as a developer and home builder, Reim led the city's economic development task force and its local chamber of commerce.

Councilman Ken Grassi recalled that Reim once promised cherries at the farmers market. When the vendor couldn't make it, Reim drove to Eastern Washington to pick up the cherries, drove back and ran the booth himself.

"He was a man of his word," Grassi said. "If he said it, he would do it, no matter what it took."

The sculpture captures Reim's deliberative manner, featuring a 41/2-foot-high male duck marching forward with a young duck on his back, its wings held out to keep balance. Walking beside the male duck is another duckling.

The nonprofit group UP for Art, working with Reim's widow and the city, commissioned sculptor Georgia Gerber to create the piece after an open competition.

The sculpture's cost is $30,000. UP for Art and the Terry Reim Memorial Fund donated $15,000. The city is contributing the remaining half from a state grant dedicated for the market square development.

Gerber, a sculptor from Whidbey Island, said the statue symbolizes Reim's drive and the whimsy of the events he helped create. She said her work also touches on themes of family and is "for the public to enjoy forever and embrace as a part of their community."

Reim McCaffree is pleased with Gerber's work. "I can't say enough about her. She took it to the whole next level."

The Reims were fixtures in University Place for the better part of their 40-year marriage, well before UP became a city in 1995.

The couple rented a home there in 1965, after Terry was drafted and ordered to report to Fort Lewis. After he completed his military service, the couple returned in 1968 to raise their family.

Reim McCaffree said the sculpture can be a metaphor for the city of nearly 31,000 residents.

"We're scrambling ... We're working hard to become a top-notch city for the people who live here and come here," she said. "I think the duck symbolizes that spirit, as well."

BALTIMORE - Rocker Frank Zappa was born in Baltimore but gained greater popular acclaim in Europe than in the United States. On Sunday, devout European fans of the late musician brought his mustachioed likeness back home in the form of a bronze bust.

Several hundred fans gathered on a sweltering afternoon as city officials dedicated the bust of the ponytailed rocker outside an east Baltimore library. The bust is a replica of another in a public square in Vilnius, Lithuania, and was donated to the city by Zappa enthusiasts in the small Baltic nation.

"The spirit of Frank Zappa is alive and well in Baltimore," Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said.

The mayor joined Zappa's widow, Gail, and three of his grown children in watching as a curtain was drawn back to reveal the bust set atop a 12-foot steel pole. Later, Zappa's son, Dweezil, took the stage with his tribute band, Zappa Plays Zappa.

Zappa was known for everything from novelty rock songs to elaborate classical compositions. He died of prostate cancer in 1993 at 52.

Sunday's ceremony marked the 25th anniversary of Zappa's testimony before Congress on freedom of expression for recording artists, though the scheduling was coincidental. Zappa had testified against proposed warning labels about lyrical content, calling them a path to censorshiop.

Libraries were a vital resource for Zappa, who had no formal music education, Gail Zappa told The Associated Press in a recent interview.

Zappa would have appreciated the bizarre way he came to be honored in his birthplace, his widow said. Zappa's songs were known for their quirky, humorous lyrics: One of his biggest hits was "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow." Yet his music was also a favorite of the avant-garde.

"He'd be wildly amused by this, because of the absurdity of these guys in Lithuania coming up with this phenomenal sculptor who normally does busts of Stalin," Gail Zappa said.

Zappa's daughter, Diva, choked up while addressing a throng that chanted Zappa's name.

"Thank you so much for just loving my dad," she said.

Also at the ceremony were the mayor of Vilnius and Saulius Paukstys, the longtime president of a Lithuanian Zappa fan club who commissioned the original statue.

He has described the effort to erect the bust in Vilnius in the early 1990s as a test of the former Soviet republic's fledgling independence. The Baltimore dedication, he said, was a great day "for art, the human mind and democracy."

Helen Urban, 61, of Silver Spring, was among the Zappa fans in the crowd and saw the original bust during a trip to Lithuania last year. The replica is in a better location, Urban said.

"They have it sitting in the parking lot of a hospital," she said. "It's ugly as sin, but it's cool."

Gail Zappa, on the other hand, finds it beautiful.

"The guy was inspired," she said of sculptor Konstantinas Bogdanas. "It's more than a likeness. It captured the force of his personality and his will in terms of being an artist."

Carroll County sculptor brings wild imagination to Westminster Library

Drivers on Main Street in Westminster will soon notice an addition to the downtown decor.

A life-size bronze lion will be sitting like a majestic sentinel atop a granite pedestal near the entrance of the Westminster Library.

"It really was a library-inspired piece," said Lisa Back, a spokeswoman for the Carroll County Public Library system.

"At the base of the lion is a young boy who is reading a book," she said. "It's a physical representation of books transporting us to other worlds."

The sculpture "Wild Imaginings" was created by Westminster artist Bart Walter, who's been a full-time professional sculptor for three decades, during which time he's done about a dozen pieces of this scale.

"We thought it was important to use local artists to keep it tied to the community," Back said.

The lion will sit atop a polished, black granite pedestal that's about 3 feet tall. The top of the lion will be about 8 feet above ground level.

"I'm sure visitors will notice the lion first, and I hope it will communicate a real lion to them," said Walter, who has created works for The Smithsonian National Zoo, in Washington, the National Museum of Wildlife Art, in Jackson Hole, Wyo., the Maryland Zoo, in Baltimore, and Northwest Middle School, in Taneytown.

"But then they'll notice the boy and wonder about the boy in the context of a lion, and hopefully think about reading and how it can transport you to anywhere you want to be," he said.

"For children, hopefully it will open up their imagination," he said.

Walter knows what it's like to be transported by books.

"I grew up in Baltimore," he said. "I was stuck in the city all week and I became a mental traveler through books."

Walter's sculpture will be unveiled Friday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m. at a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the library's renovation.

The Westminster branch is 30 years old, Back said.

"It was showing its age inside as well as outside," she said. Over the course of about three years, the library's roof has been replaced, lighting was improved, accessibility and walkways were improved, and the public spaces inside were renovated, including the children's area.

"You go through a tunnel to go into the children's area," Back said.

The cost of the renovation, not including the sculpture, was around $1.6 million, paid for with a state grant and with matching funds from the county.

"The final stage is the re-landscaping of the park in front of the branch," Back said.

The sculpture was paid for with private donations -- with a healthy discount from the artist himself, who said normally, a piece this size can run hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"We did it as a favor to a local institution that we enjoy and have enjoyed for a long time," Walter said. "I was just trying to help them make it happen."

The sculpture echoes a tradition of putting lion statues at the entrances of buildings.

"Sculptures have been used as guardians of libraries and art museums for well over 100 years," Walter said.

Some notable examples of lion statues as guardians are at the New York Public Library and at the Baltimore Museum of Art, putting the Westminster branch among grand company.

"Coming to the library should be more of an event than an errand," Back said.

"Wild Imaginings" is the first of four sculptures the Westminster branch library hopes to purchase from local artists.

The next piece will be carved on site next summer from limestone contributed by the Lehigh Cement Company in Union Bridge. The library is still searching for an artist and an artwork for that block of stone, Back said.

Enough With the Statues, Already

There's nothing wrong with commissioning a statue in honor of the late Alabama football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, who is universally regarded as one of the icons of college football.

Anyone who doesn't have a heart of stone would have supported Marshall's decision to display a memorial to the members of the 1970 football team who died in a plane crash.

But when a conversation about football statuary starts to veer toward the likes of Nick Saban, Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow, it's probably time to stop, locate the nearest paper bag and breathe into it.

If you need any more evidence that college football is in the midst of a new era of blind extravagance and euphoric self-congratulation, all you have to do is start counting statues.

A growing number of schools across the nation have decided they aren't content to reward winning coaches by paying them millions of dollars—or to honor their recent star players by retiring jersey numbers. The latest technique is to send a few still photos to the neighborhood sculptor.

By the end of the season, Alabama hopes to honor its current football coach of three seasons, Mr. Saban, with a statue outside Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. This is something the school has done for its other national-title-winning coaches. It was initially thought the statue might be up already, but it's still being molded because earlier renderings weren't quite right. "It looked like Robert De Niro," a school official said.

Florida, Alabama's top competition in the Southeastern Conference in recent years, is close to completing statues of the school's three Heisman Trophy winners—Steve Spurrier (1966), Mr. Wuerffel (1996) and Mr. Tebow (2007).

Oklahoma, meanwhile, is becoming statue central. Four of the Sooners' Heisman winners have gotten them since 2005; a fifth, of 2008 winner Sam Bradford, is on the way. Oklahoma also plans statues of four of its coaches over the next year, including Bob Stoops, the current coach.

The schools say the statues dress up stadiums, giving them a formal "front door" that celebrates their history. They say fans delight in snapping photos of the statues. They also note that these artworks are paid for in an appropriate manner: Mr. Saban's statue, which will cost about $50,000, is being funded by the Crimson Tide Foundation via private donations. So it's not like tuition increases are supporting this. "I'd just say that, right or wrong, the thing that brings a lot of immediate attention to a university is its athletic programs," says Alabama athletic director Mal Moore. "It's a way of recognizing that success."

It's obviously debatable, of course—especially in the case of Mr. Saban, who was coaching at rival LSU just a few seasons ago. "Saban statue is too much, too soon," said the headline of a Birmingham News column earlier this year.

"It's a dangerous precedent about the statement of football over academics," says author Chris Warner, an LSU alumnus and SEC football fan who wrote a book about conference tailgating. "We're building monuments to coaches. It's a pretty good indicator of where we are."

Traditionally, statues have been erected for football legends long after their playing careers or after decades of service, like the late Grambling coach Eddie Robinson, who had a museum opened in his memory in February on the school's Louisiana campus. Penn State's 83-year-old coach Joe Paterno, whose 18th-ranked Nittany Lions visit Mr. Saban's top-ranked Tide in a highly anticipated game on Saturday, had a statue unveiled in his honor in 2001.

Others have been immortalized in bronze or stone after a tragic death. Nebraska found a way to honor a revered former coach in tandem with a fallen former player: A 2006 statue depicts Tom Osborne, the school's all-time winningest coach, instructing quarterback Brook Berringer, who died in a 1996 plane crash at age 22.

Two years ago, Syracuse unveiled a statue of star running back Ernie Davis, the first black Heisman winner, who died of leukemia less than two years after winning the 1961 award. It was a fine subject, but there was just one problem: The statue depicted Davis wearing modern football equipment, including Nike shoes. (Nike didn't exist when Davis played.) The mistake was later corrected.

In 2003, Washington honored former coach Jim Owens with a statue, an event that spurred an NAACP protest. Mr. Owens had been accused of racism in 1969 for suspending four black players for a perceived lack of loyalty. Mr. Owens, who died last year, apologized at the unveiling.

Some subjects have approached these honors with humility. Mr. Wuerffel, the former Florida star, now works with Desire Street Ministries, a group that works to transform inner-city neighborhoods through what it calls "spiritual development." He says statues on campus shouldn't be limited to football players like him. "There are countless unsung heroes in our world that don't get the public attention that athletes and entertainers do."

"You don't have the statue there to idolize," says ESPN analyst and former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz, who received one in 2008. "You have it to remind people of the tradition."

Mr. Saban's planned statue is a symbol of changing times. It used to be that no Alabama coach was worthy of mention in the same breath as Bryant, an Alabama player who returned and won six national titles there. But Bryant has been gone so long—he died in 1983—that Mr. Saban is all many Alabama students know, says Paul Finebaum, a Birmingham radio host and columnist.

And so public opinion about the Saban statue, which Mr. Finebaum says is mostly in favor, is somewhat split by age. "People 50 or above say, 'I don't have a problem with it, but don't you think we ought to wait?' " says Mr. Finebaum. "The young people wonder: Why doesn't he have a statue already?"

Philadelphia Museum of Art gets a giant plug

It dangled high in the air, a connector seeking a connection, before slowly being lowered into the waiting earth.

At 11:45 this morning, the Philadelphia Museum of Art was at last plugged in.

After hours of maneuvering and digging and pondering, the museum installed the latest addition to its outdoor sculpture garden, a gift from collector and philanthropist David Pincus - Claes Oldenburg's Giant Three-Way Plug, Scale A, a nearly 10-foot long electric plug, a cube tap grown to monstrous proportions, now protruding from a grassy knob outside the museum's west entrance.

Dating from 1970, the plug is the second colossal outdoor sculpture fashioned by Oldenburg using everyday objects as inspiration. (The first was his Lipstick, installed at Yale University in 1969.)

Pincus, 83, who watched Wednesday's installation for hours, acquired one of three big plugs (the other two are at the St. Louis Art Museum and the Allen Art Museum, Oberlin College), early in the 1970s and, with the artist's assistance, installed it in his Wynnewood backyard.

He remembers Oldenburg coming down from New York to help install the piece so many years ago.

"We had a wonderful time," Pincus said. "We were digging in the backyard. Even Oldenburg. He loved fresh fruit and my wife went out to get him some. He did some drawings in a little book."

Now Pincus has given the piece to the art museum in honor of Anne d'Harnoncourt, the museum's late director. The sculpture garden, which began with a sheaf of works by Isamu Noguchi, will be named in d'Harnoncourt's honor at a Sept. 7 ceremony.

"I'm sure Anne would be delighted with what they've done with the garden," said Pincus, now 83. "She was something special."

Will he miss seeing the plug as he strolls behind his home?

"My kids will," Pincus said, as he watched the crew of workers from Atelier Art Services, the Philadelphia firm that stored and moved the piece prior to its installation.

"'Dad, don't do that!'" Pincus said his grown children urged. "But art is for enjoyment. You have it in a lifetime. It doesn't belong to you."

Oldenburg, who couldn't make it down from New York for the Wednesday dig and drop, said the concept for the plug, made of Cor-Ten steel and bronze, was actually architectural.

"The plug looks very much like a building," he said, describing the form. It is actually set into the earth, like a building rising from a subterranean foundation.

"There was also the idea that this might have fallen from outer space," said Oldenburg. "It has no base, no platform." In fact, he said, it appears to have "fallen and created its own hole in the ground."

With the addition of the plug to the art museum's sculpture garden, there will be three high-visibility outdoor Oldenburgs in Philadelphia. A fourth is coming next year, a 50-plus foot paint brush rising from a plaza - yet to be constructed - next to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, across North Broad Street from the new convention center extension.

There is no question that Philadelphia is now the center of public work by Oldenburg, who is known for creating mammoth renderings of everyday objects. The first two works installed in the city were Clothespin, erected at the Centre Square office development, 15th and Market Streets, in 1976; it was followed in 1981 by the University of Pennsylvania's Split Button.

Salvador Dalí Sculpture Stolen from Belfortmuseum in Belgium

BRUGES.- The sculpture "Woman with Drawers" by Salvador Dali, valued at 100,000 euros, was stolen from an exhibition hall in Bruges (NW Belgium), the Belgian press said today.

A security camera filmed how the thieves hid the statue in a bag and left the show shortly after noon Wednesday, images that are being analyzed by police, according to several newspapers.

The theft has not been confirmed yet by the company hosting the exhibition, Interart.

The work, a bronze of about 50 centimeters wide and 30 tall, weighs about ten kilos.

In a private gathering of family and friends Dennis and Joyce Griffin unveiled the life-sized sculptures of their two grand daughters, London and Carly, sculpted by Anita Watts in the garden patio area of their beautiful Kentucky home.

Anita did extensive sketches of the two girls to create the sculptures that skillfully reveal the girls individual personalities and interests. "Carly" tells of her love of dancing as she swirls around on a base of Kentucky flagstone. "London" with a wide smile greets her Grandmother with some flowers she has picked, totally unaware of the butterfly that has settled nearby.

Anita was commissioned to do these life-sized sculptures because of the way she is able to capture emotion and personality, along with realistic detail, in her portrait sculptures. Working in bronze, Anita is meticulous in creating unique personal sculptures of people doing their favorite activities.

Official Texas State Sculptor, Edd Hayes was picked to create a monument celebrating Katy, Texas and the prairie surrounding as the Goose Capital. The area has been for many years known for the millions of different species of geese that winter there.

Hayes will create a fourteen feet tall bronze sculpture of four huge 1 1/2 life-size Canadian geese landing and one goose on the ground grazing. The monument will be just off Interstate 10 at the Katy Mills exit. The bronze monument will be landscaped with a limestone rock wall facing the highway with large bronze letters spelling out Katy Texas on the front of the three feet tall limestone wall. It will be known as "The Landing". The monument will be installed in the winter of 2011.

Winnipeg Millennium Library Park set for new Sculpture

The refurbished Millennium Library Park will be the site of the city's most expensive public art project to date.

A $575,000 sculpture will be commissioned with money from the Winnipeg public art program and the 2010 Cultural Capital of Canada fund, officials announced Friday.

The actual piece and the artist making it have yet to be chosen.

A call to artists will be sent out nationally and internationally, and the winner will be chosen by a five-person selection committee, Winnipeg Arts Council officials said in a news release.

"The piece will be a permanent, contemporary artwork using elements of water and light," the statement said. "Whichever artist or artists are chosen will have to take the unique climate of Winnipeg into account, and ensure the artwork will also have a winter presence."

The sculpture is one of several arts projects being funded by the $2-million federal grant for the 2010 cultural capital program.

The arts council's public art program has $500,000 a year in its kitty.

The city's most expensive public art project to date is Montrealer Catherine Widgery's $250,000 River Arch sculpture, installed on the new Norwood Bridge in 1998.

Recent commissions include David Perrett's $150,000 bus shelter at the Ellice Avenue entrance to the University of Winnipeg and Gordon Reeve's $75,000 stainless-steel glacier at the Portage Avenue entrance to Assiniboine Park.

New York, NY -- An ancient Roman group statue of great importance and beauty - a depiction of the Three Graces of Greek mythology - has been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The marble sculpture is a Second Century AD Roman copy of a Greek work from the Second Century BC. Discovered in Rome in 1892, the statue has been on loan to the museum from a private collector since 1992, and has been on view in the center of the Leon Levy and Shelby White Sculpture Court since it opened in 2007.

In making the announcement, Thomas P. Campbell, the museum's director, commented on the history of the composition: "The charming dancelike pose of the Three Graces - who stand in alternating front and back view, with their hands on each other's shoulders - is one of the most famous and enduring compositions known from antiquity. It was first developed in the Second Century BC, continued in popularity in the Renaissance, and has been influential during every subsequent period of Western European art. Thanks to the generous support of several trustees and other good friends of the institution, we are delighted to announce the addition of this superb, extremely well-preserved and beautifully carved work to the Met's encyclopedic collection, where it will continue to delight and inspire future generations."

The sculpture is on view in the center of the Leon Levy and Shelby White Court, where it is displayed with other Roman sculptures derived from classical and Hellenistic models.

The Three Graces are Aglaia (Beauty), Euphrosyne (Mirth) and Thalia (Abundance). They bestow what is most pleasurable and beneficent in nature and society. In mythology, they play an attendant role; their closest connection is with Aphrodite, whom they serve as handmaidens. For ancient authors, the triad also served as an allegory for the cycle of giving, accepting and returning favors, which were described by the ancient Roman philosopher Seneca as the "chief bond of human society."

After its discovery in Rome in 1892 near the ancient Forum of Nerva and Vespasian's Temple of Peace, this sculpture entered the collection of Joachim Ferroni and has since attracted much scholarly attention.

The Three Graces traditionally are shown as nudes with water jars covered by drapery at their feet, a representation that ultimately derives from the famous classical statue of Aphrodite by Praxiteles located at Knidos.

LONDON: A life-sized elephant in a crouched position by UK-born Indian sculptor Bharti Kher fetched over £900,000 at an auction by Sotheby's in London Monday evening.

"The Skin Speaks a Language not its Own" is one of the most talked-about works by Kher, said the auction house which expected it to fetch between £700,000 and a million pounds.

It ultimately went for £993, 250, just short of the high end target, at the Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction.

It took Kher 10 months to create. Zara Porter-Hill, director and head of Sotheby's Indian Art Department, said: "Despite our familiarity with elephants, nothing prepares the viewer for the emotional experience of seeing Kher's elephant, huge and incongruous in the gallery space. With her head resting on her front foot, she is brought down to our level and her glassy black eye entreats a communion and proximity rarely encountered in the wild."

Bronze Sculptures highlight Endangered and Extinct Birds

Starkly silhouetted against the Willamette River, five somber birds stand on a patch of grass at the southern tip of Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Elegant, melancholy and frozen in time, they silently invite passers-by to touch them, to take photos, to wonder where they came from.

From a distance, artist Todd McGrain, sporting a baseball cap and dirt-covered jeans, contentedly watched this week as people interacted with his larger-than-life sculptures.

Cast in blackened bronze, standing about 6 feet tall and weighing up to 700 pounds, the sculptures came from his studio in Ithaca, N.Y., where he's an associate art professor at Cornell University. Each one memorializes an extinct species.

The sculptures, presented by the Audubon Society of Portland and installed Wednesday, will remain for six months with the aim of raising awareness of the dangers facing today's bird populations.

"Once you know something of the life of that species, you realize that not having it in the world is a huge loss," McGrain said. That realization, in turn, is meant to provoke thought about human consumption of natural resources and disregard for the environment.

Nearly a third of the nation's 800 species are endangered or face significant threats, according to a 2009 report by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with climate change adding to long-standing threats such as hunting and deforestation.

"There have always been changes in climate," said Brad Bortner, Portland-based chief of Fish and Wildlife's migratory birds division. "But we're seeing an accelerating rate of change now."

McGrain made three identical sets of bird sculptures as part of "The Lost Bird Project" and has long wanted to display a set in Portland because of the city's progressiveness and social conscience, he said. But there was a practical reason, too.

"Right now, there's a great deal of stress on the environment of the West Coast, and we're at an important place to remember past losses," he said.

He contacted Portland's Audubon Society five years ago after finishing his first sculpture. "I thought it was intriguing back then, and I had only seen one photo of the passenger pigeon," said Executive Director Meryl Redisch, recalling her first chat with McGrain.

Portland's display includes a Labrador duck, shyly preening; a passenger pigeon, an iconic extinct bird; and the Carolina parakeet, stripped of its vibrant color but bending forward with curiosity. Next is the heath hen, which McGrain calls feisty; and a great auk, one he has a particular fondness for and finds hardest to describe.

"There's no single word for the great auk," McGrain said, brushing its surface clean with his hands. "He's a real character. Like a penguin -- just a really wonderful character."

After the birds end their Portland run, McGrain would like them to visit other West Coast cities. "L.A. and Seattle -- wherever they can find roosts," he said with a laugh. He's breaking up another set, permanently placing each sculpture where the bird was last seen. And he wants the third set, still in his studio, to tour the East Coast.

McGrain got to know the long-gone species by visiting museum specimens and studying their relatives' behavior. He kept a homing pigeon in his studio for six months. Before deciding on poses, he crafted about a dozen models of each bird.

The sculptures' dark, minimalist forms are meant to draw people in and to inspire them to seek more information about the lost birds. McGrain spent a lot of time sanding them to be seamless and tactile, he said, like a beach stone. He chose a matte black finish because of the way it absorbs light.

"They're like black voids," McGrain said, watching two young women taking photos of the birds. He plans to visit the sculptures regularly over the next few weeks, photographing the community's interaction with them.

Soon, a sign will go up to explain their meaning.

"The information will really make a difference," he said as a man approached the young women to ask if they knew anything about the birds. When they couldn't help, he strode toward McGrain.

It seems years of getting to know the creatures won't let McGrain forget their transitory nature.

"Well," McGrain began, gesturing toward his birds, "it's temporary."

Graffiti a concern for Buddha Sculpture

Even Buddha can't catch a break in San Francisco.

The 15-ton, three-headed copper sculpture that was unveiled in Civic Center Plaza last month for the 30th anniversary of San Francisco's sister-city relationship with Shanghai has already been defaced twice by graffiti.

Officials retained an art restorer to remove the tags, including one scrawl proclaiming, "Jesus is the one."

Now, City Hall fears that the giant Buddha may prove too inviting to booze-fueled partygoers from the nearby World Cup big screen telecasts and Gay Priders looking for a little climbing fun during their upcoming post-parade party.

So the $1.6 million sculpture, on loan from artist Zhang Huan, is in protective custody for the next three weeks, surrounded by a 6-foot-tall screened fence to deter climbers and anyone else.

Pierino da Vinci sculpture needs Saving

An effort to keep a bronze artwork by Leonardo da Vinci's nephew in the UK is being made by banning its export.

Authorities hope the temporary measure will allowing funding for Pierino da Vinci's sculpture to be found.

The piece, which depicts a harrowing scene from Dante's Inferno, has a recommended value of £10m.

Part of the Devonshire collection, it has been called "a treasure of the utmost importance" by the Reviewing Committee recommending the ban.

The sculpture, which was once thought to be the work of Michaelangelo, will not be able to be exported until September.

If serious interest in purchasing the artwork is shown, it is likely to be extended until June 2011 to finalise any deal.

Bids from public bodies for less than the recommended value will be considered by culture minister Ed Vaizey.

The bronze sculpure, a rare work by Da Vinci's nephew, was made during the 16th Century, and was brought to England one hundred years later.

Pierino da Vinci died in Pisa in 1553 aged just 24, but had been considered a successor to the talent of his illustrious uncle.

ORLEANS - To Mike Cannon, who frequently catches a few hours in the sun on Rock Harbor beach, it was like the angel suddenly appeared.

"I think it's amazing. I was here last week and I didn't even see it," he said, gazing up at the 13-foot-tall bronze sculpture on top of the bell tower at the Church of the Transfiguration at the Community of Jesus.

The detailed 4,000-pound angel by sculptress Daphné Du Barry was lifted by crane to the top of the 100-foot-high campanile Friday and bolted to a pre-cast platform. It marks the capstone of a decade of artwork centered on, and in, the church, that began with its dedication in 2000.

"It really was the goal to have all of the art installed by the 10th anniversary, and with one small exception, we are there," said Chris Kanaga, the community's project manager for construction and artwork.

Except for a few war memorials, Orleans isn't blessed with many public sculptures. Local churches tend to have modest vanes or crucifixes atop their steeples, so the sight of a bronze angel, more than twice the height of a man, hovering above the treeline in a very public spot could have potentially generated some controversy.

The tower, and the community, have been through that before. When it was first proposed, Orleans and Eastham officials objected to the height of the church and tower and asked for the Cape Cod Commission to review the project. A 1993 court settlement between the commission and the community set the bell tower height at 75 feet. But the commission reconsidered after the church architect said the tower and church were out of proportion, and the community asked for an additional 25 feet. In April of 2008, the commission approved the additional height.

Kanaga said Du Barry, who has considerable experience in public sculpture, did a lot of research in scaling the size of the angel to the tower. The figure is intended to represent a passage from the Book of Revelation in which there is an angel for every church, Kanaga said. It depicts the angel as if it has just landed on the roof of the bell tower, its gaze cast downward on the bronze doors of the church.

No one on the Rock Harbor pier yesterday found any fault with it.

"I haven't any problem with it at all," said Cannon. "It's nice."

Leah Detellis was eating lunch with her son Connor, 2.

"I think of angels as pretty inoffensive," she said. Detellis didn't feel the angel and the church tower were out of scale with their surroundings.

"The tower is barely above the treeline," she said.

Another woman thought the angel gave focus and meaning to the bell tower, which she felt looked incomplete before.

"I would say the tower was unfinished," agreed Kanaga. "It was always intended to have a religious symbol on the tower, but the subject matter was undecided."

The roof for the bell tower was built on the ground. Before it was lifted to the top, a template was made of the platform and the bolts that would secure whatever symbol the church chose to install, Kanaga said. When Du Barry, an internationally known sculptress who has done work for the royal family of Monaco and the Vatican, was chosen, that template was shipped to her foundry in Pietrasanta, Italy.

Du Barry first executes a full-size clay sculpture, which is used to make a wax mold. Bronze is poured into the mold, and the statue is stabilized by a stainless steel skeleton. Once finished, the angel was crated and shipped by boat to Boston.

Du Barry will be at the church this Saturday, along with other artists whose works decorate the church, to celebrate the 10th anniversary. The public is invited to speak with the artists, Kanaga said.

From drug addicts in the 1970s ripping copper plumbing from walls to scrap-yard regulars of more recent years who proffer whatever fell off a truck, stealing hunks of coil or reinforcing bar has mostly been about having a strong back and a willingness to get dirty, law enforcement experts say.

“Before, it was go check the pawnshops and scrap yards,” said Jim Sauerwein, a senior investigator for the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office in south-central Kansas. “Now it’s picture phones, the Internet and eBay.”

The metabolism of the market for stolen metal has accelerated as well, Mr. Sauerwein said. His rule of thumb in tracing a theft these days is that whatever is stolen has probably changed hands as many as four times within 48 hours of its disappearance.

...Scrap metal dealers are feeling the heat as well, in preventing thefts on their own property — some have recently hired 24-hour guards — and in protecting themselves from legal trouble for buying stolen property. One big problem is that metal in hunks or coils or machinery in pieces is generic and hard to track.

Greek police seize 2 rare statues from 2 farmers

ATHENS, Greece - Police in southern Greece have seized a rare twin pair of 2,500-year-old marble statues and arrested two farmers who allegedly planned to sell them abroad for euro10 million ($12.43 million), authorities said Tuesday.

Police said two Greeks aged 42 and 48 were arrested in the Peloponnese area late Friday as they were loading the illegally excavated figures of young men into a truck. Authorities are seeking a third man suspected of belonging to a smuggling gang that planned to spirit the 6th century B.C. works out of the country.

"This is a very important find, of fabulous value, and (both statues) were ready to be taken out of Greece," Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos said.

Archaeologists said Tuesday the statues are "outstanding works of art" and may have come from a temple or cemetery in a lost ancient city in the Peloponnese region in southern Greece. Both are in excellent condition, but lack sections of their lower legs and were gashed by a plow or digging machinery.

They stand 1.82 meters (5 feet 9 inches) and 1.78 meters (5 feet 8 inches) high, and were probably carved by the same sculptor out of thick-grained island marble between 550-520 B.C, at the height of the archaic period of sculpture.

"They are exactly the same, with a slight variation in hairstyle and a small difference in height," said Nikos Kaltsas, director of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens where the finds were temporarily housed for conservation and study. "The artist may have wanted to produce two similar figures that would form part of a group."

The statues are of the stiff, highly formalized Kouros type widespread in the 7th and 6th centuries B.C. which portrayed gods, heroes or aristocrats and were painted in bright colors. From the 5th century on, Greek sculpture became more fluid and lifelike, culminating in the naturalism of the Hellenistic era.

Such discoveries in good condition are uncommon - about three have turned up during excavations in the past decade. But matching pairs are particularly rare.

Although the precise spot of the find is still unclear, authorities believe it may coincide with the lost ruins of Tenea, a city that according to ancient writers lay between Corinth and Mycenae and was first populated by prisoners of war brought back by victorious Greeks from the Trojan War - recorded in Homer's "Iliad." A similar, but slightly earlier statue discovered in what may have been Tenea's cemetery is displayed in Munich.

Archaeologists hope to find the missing leg sections, because the breaks are recent.

Police chief Lefteris Economou said the arrests followed information from culture ministry officials. He provided no details on the identity of the potential buyers or which country the finds had been heading for.

Antiquities looting is a major problem in Greece, where treasures - by law all state property - can lie inches below farmers' plows or modern buildings, especially in cities like Athens that have been constantly inhabited for thousands of years.

Illegally excavated finds can be impressive to look at, but all the valuable context, which in an organized excavation provides information on their use, date and origin, is lost during hasty looting digs.

"Going after antiquities thieves is our main priority," Geroulanos said. "Work has been done in that direction ... and we are starting to see the first major results."

Dozens of illegally exported finds have been returned to Greece over the past few years, including four masterpieces from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

From Grass Roots Movement to World-Class Exhibit White Plains, NY - Beginning five years ago as a "grass roots" movement to put sculpture in White Plains' public space, the city's Sculpture Committee has come of age. With the 62-piece, 30-year retrospective of American master sculptor David Hayes, art in White Plains has overgrown its sculpture gardens and spread into a veritable city-wide museum, sprouting shape and color in public and private space throughout the city's suburban neighborhoods and downtown residences and businesses.

White Plains Mayor Joseph Delfino has fully embraced the arts throughout his 11-year administration and is one of the Hayes exhibit's most vocal fans. "An important measure of a city's greatness is it's dedication to the arts, which, to me, is our heart and soul," he said. "Outdoor art unifies a city in a way that transcends words. Whether we like a piece or not, we react to it, and, over time, we become accustomed to it. It becomes part of who we are as a community."

One of America's great living contemporary sculptors, Mr. Hayes creates dynamic art from flat sheets of painted steel, welded and bolted into forms inspired by nature. Mr. Hayes himself, his sons David M. and John, and his granddaughter Alexandra, along with crew members of the White Plains Department of Public Works and volunteers from local neighborhoods, houses of worship and schools, have assembled the pieces in puzzle-like fashion one at a time. Eli Schonberger, an ebullient 80-plus-year old who won't let two knee replacements get in the way of his skiing, is as committed to the Sculpture Committee as he is to the slopes. It was he who planted one of the first seeds of the "grass roots" art movement and he who approached David Hayes with an idea that has resulted in the largest outdoor exhibit for both the city and the artist.

Schonberger and Mayor Delfino have reached out to corporate sponsors to support the sculpture installation. The RPW Group, Inc., Heyman Properties and Belway Electric are the exhibit's current major supporters who have gotten the exhibit off the ground. More funding is needed but Schonberger is optimistic about the future. "We're hoping this newest city-wide exhibition will now generate financial support so that we can continue our efforts," he said. Hayes' works are included in the permanent collections of prominent museums around the world including the Guggenheim and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The year-long White Plains exhibit is open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The exhibit has been extended to November of 2010.

Giant Replica DaVinci Horse Sculpture finds a home

A copy of Leonardo da Vinci's bronze horse has chosen Michigan as its stomping ground at the Frederik Meijer Gardens.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. Leonardo da Vinci never did get to see his horse come in.

Although he drew up plans for a mammoth 7.3-metre bronze horse for his hometown of Milan more than 500 years ago, his clay model was destroyed by the invading French.

Today, Leo as he was known in the old neighbourhood could see his design fulfilled in his hometown in Italy. Or just 580 kilometres down the road from Toronto in Grand Rapids, Mich.

U.S. grocery store magnate Frederik Meijer helped sponsor the creation of Leonardo da Vincis horse in Milan. Meijer also thought his hometown could also use a spectacular sculpture of da Vincis horse.
Thats why Grand Rapids has an exact copy of the Milan statue. In Michigan its called the American Horse.

A team of Clydesdales pulled a shroud off the huge sculpture in September 1999. Time Magazine declared the horse sculpture one of the 10 best international designs of that year.

It stands in Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park where Meijer and his wife have deposited much of their private sculpture collection. The garden is a 51-hectare nature preserve where large sculptures by some of Americas finest artists are lurking among the forests and wetlands. You can walk the boardwalk trails, or ride an open tram through the park.

Many more fine creations are displayed in various indoor galleries, plus copies of da Vincis own drawings for his horse. There is also a detailed description about how the 15-ton horse was created.

As well as artwork, Frederik Meijer Gardens (www.meijergardens.org) features plenty of natures beautiful creations. A three-storey greenhouse houses colourful birds from exotic South Sea Islands and the flowers, shrubs and trees that make them feel right at home.

But be careful where you walk. The greenhouse is also home to Kiwi, the little birds from New Zealand that cant fly. They skitter amidst your feet.

Frederik Meijer Gardens hosts a wide variety of flower and plant shows each spring. And in April the place is alive with butterflies, which will eventually be released from the glass dome to make their way south.

The sculpture park is on East Beltline Ave. N.E., just off Interstate 96 on the Toronto side of Grand Rapids. Its open every day until 5 p.m. and until 9 p.m. on Thursday during the summer months. Admission is $12 (all figures U.S.) for adults and $9 for seniors.

Frederik Meijer isnt the only local boy to do well. Grand Rapids was also home to President Gerald Ford and his wife, Betty. His presidential library has been built on the west bank of the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids.

Meijer had a portion of the original Berlin Wall built in the lobby of Fords presidential museum. It also features holdings from Washingtons Smithsonian Museum, which circulates many of its materials and displays through the Grand Rapids facility the centrepiece of an eight-hectare riverside park in the heart of an attractive downtown core.

Archaeologists Unearth Early Roman Sculpture Fragments at Stobi Site

Archaeologists unearthed a sculpture fragments of a man's head and a small torso dating from to the Early Roman period during recent excavations of the ancient Stobi site in central Macedonia.

The discoveries, found at the temple building which has been undergoing archaeological excavations, are rare and important, as they will shed light on the life of people during that period, archaeologist Silvana Blahzevska, Director of the National Institution Stobi, explained, cited by the Vecer newspaper.

"The way the hair and the face of the found head were made, as well as the ap

pearance of the remaining part of the sculpture, suggest that it was of an emperor or an important citizen who lived in the first century," Blazhevka stated.
Archaeologists expect that the find will help them learn more about the temple which has been continuously robbed since antiquity . about whom it was dedicated to and when it was constructed.

According to Blazhevska, so far there was no detailed information on the temple, whose roof was entirely destroyed and whose floor was covered with rubble from different time periods. Since a Russian coin from 1863 was found at the site, according to the arcaheologist, the temple was thought to have been fully plundered, but now, fortunately, it turns out that the first floor has not been touched.

The excavations at the ancient site of Stobi are being carried out by a team of 65 archaeologists and 400 workers.

Director of the Cultural Heritage Protection Office Pasko Kuzman told the publication that many other archaeological sites, in addition to Stobi, will continue to be excavated this year, while Minister of Culture Elizabeta Kancheska . Milevska said that work at the site will continue as long as the weather conditions allow.

The ancient town of Stobi, which developed from a Paeonian settlement established in the Archaic period, is located on the main road that leads from the Danube to the Aegean Sea and is considered by many to be the most famous archaeological site in the Republic of Macedonia.

Giant horse sculpture intended to become a new landmark in Kent have been given planning permission

EBBSFLEET VALLEY, KENT THAMESIDE, UK - Artist Mark Wallinger's White Horse is 33 times life-size and, overlooking the A2 in the Ebbsfleet Valley, will be seen by up to 60 million people a year.

The steel-frame scheme, selected following a competition, was unanimously approved yesterday by Gravesham Borough Council.

The backers of the project, Eurostar, Land Securities and London & Continental Railways, have so far injected around £1 million of seed funding to get the project off the ground.

Wallinger said: "This is a tremendously exciting project. I was honoured that my White Horse won the competition and I am delighted that Gravesham Borough Council has granted it planning permission. The team and I are very much looking forward to creating a new landmark for the area."

Project Director Mark Davy said the sculpture would "act as an important catalyst for the cultural identity of the area".

"Ebbsfleet Valley will be a major new mixed-use development, which is set to become a hub for an emerging new economy in the South-east," he added.

Other parties involved in the project include engineer Alliance Design Group.

Copper is once again on the rise, forcing a price increase industry wide. As the main component in bronze, this metal is essential to the creation of the many pieces you see on our site. As stated on wsj.com: Oil and copper ended at heights not seen since 2008, boosted by evidence that the U.S. economy is recovering just as the two commodities enter their peak demand period. May copper, which has the most open positions, settled up 1.3% to $3.6315 a pound on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, its highest close since July 2008. The front-month April contract ended up 1.4% at $3.6260.

Times they are a changin'. The economy and Small Business

The economical downturn has created a difficult situation for everybody, but maybe especially the small business. Spending is WAY down. Debts are way up. Not a good combination for a small business owner that needs those non existent dollars to survive. And, since desperate times call for desperate measures that meant adjusting our business strategy. For the first three quarters of our existence as a foundry direct source for bronze sculptures and fountains we were predominantly a strictly wholesale distributor that catered to the needs of the online store. These are people that have set up a website where people can purchase the items but have no actual inventory of their own. They buy from us and then sell the pieces on their sites for a profit, the definition of a middle man. Since the economical shift however, many of those middlemen either folded or began selling smaller items with less of a mark up. This forced us to change our thinking as well. Since we can no longer rely on our wholesale customers for orders we began positioning ourselves as a foundry direct Retailer with wholesale pricing. Which is true. We are foundry direct and we do offer wholesale pricing, sometimes below wholesale pricing. In fact, probably 90% of our business is now done as a retailer. Adjusting with the times is what has enabled us to continue to survive and sell our items in spite of an economy that dictates otherwise. Patina (pronounced /ˈpætənə/ or /pəˈtiːnə/) is a film on the surface of bronze or similar metals (produced by oxidation over a long period); a sheen on wooden furniture produced by age, wear, and polishing; or any such acquired change of a surface through age and exposure. On metal, patina is a coating of various chemical compounds such as oxides or carbonates formed on the surface during exposure to the elements (weathering). Patina also refers to accumulated changes in surface texture and colour that result from normal use of an object such as a coin or a piece of furniture over time.

Patinas are restricted to exposed surfaces and are fragile (that is, they can flake off). One reason bronze is so highly valued in statuary is that its patina protects or passivates it against further corrosion. This natural patina is solid and seldom shows a tendency to flake. Brass is also resistant to corrosion, but it is, in the long run, not as attractive since local pitting shows against the shiny background.

The green patina that forms naturally on copper and bronze is often mis-named verdigris and usually consists of a mixture of chlorides, sulphides and carbonates. copper carbonate or copper chloride. Atacamite is another name for the patina compounds. Verdigris can be produced on copper by addition of vinegar (acetic acid) - such a verdigris is water-soluble and will not last on the outside of a building like a "true" patina.

One example of a patina is a green surface texture created by slow chemical alteration of copper, producing a basic carbonate. It can form on pure copper objects as well as alloys which contain copper, such as bronze or brass.

Artists and metalworkers often deliberately add patinas as a part of the original design and decoration of art and furniture, or to simulate antiquity in newly-made objects.

A wide range of chemicals, both household and commercial, can give a variety of patinas. They are often used by artists as surface embellishments either for color, texture, or both. Patination composition varies with the reacted elements and these will determine the color of the patina. For copper alloys, such as bronze, exposure to chlorides leads to green, while sulfur compounds (such as "liver of sulfur") tend to brown.

We found this wonderful piece of American history in a barn! It still has the ORIGINAL battleship grey paint on it! Under the paint is a solid bronze binnacle. We decided to leave the piece as is because we didn't want to tamper with the historical look and feel of it. This auction also includes the compass, manufactured by the John E Hand & Sons company of Philadelphia, PA. The compass has a serial number on it in case you want to try and research it! This is a MUST HAVE for any Naval historian, museum, library, or collector. Would also look wonderful as a display piece in a nautical themed restaurant, bar, or other establishment. These pieces can go for nearly double our asking price, and that's just for the binnacle, not including the compass!

The recent earthquake in Chile will most certainly have a far reaching affect on many people and industries. One of those industries that is certain to be affected are the bronze foundry and sculpture businesses that provide art, public statuary, and fountains. Vast copper mines have been virtually shut down by the recent earthquake which has already taken hundreds of lives and caused a massive amount of damage to the country's infrastructure. What this means for the foundries and statuary dealers around the world is an almost certain major hike in prices due to the loss of copper, which is essential to the creation of bronze. The price of copper has nearly tripled in the last 2 months alone, and that was BEFORE the earthquake. There's no telling where this will send the pricing. If you're looking to add a bronze statue or fountain to your park, garden, or landscape, NOW is the time to buy. Pricing at many places will stay the same for in-stock items but newer or re-orders of the same piece may be double the price. Being hesitant to commit may really cost you where it hurts the most, your wallet.
